Job Summary
The MTSS - Reading Interventionist role is an integral part of the High School teams, teaching and progress monitoring students that require reading intervention. This is a full-time, fully on-site role based at either KIPP DC College Prep or KIPP DC Legacy College Prep with an anticipated start date of 7/20/2026.

About the Team
High School includes two schools in Washington, DC, serving grades 9-12. Our teachers, leaders, and student support teams work together to provide instruction that is rigorous, culturally responsive, and grounded in strong relationships with students and families. We believe classrooms should be academically challenging, joyful, and identity-affirming, and we support teachers through coaching, collaborative planning structures, and dedicated development time.


About the Role
The MTSS Reading interventionist provides targeted instruction and school support to meet the needs of students who meet the criteria for tier 3 literacy instruction.

Location and Type of Work
This is an exempt position and will report to the Principal.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching (70%)

  • Instruct small groups of students in reading in six to eight week cycles, to include a minimum of four literacy groups daily 
  • Analyze student data to design instructional action plans
  • Monitor progress of instruction action plans with assessments, daily instructional notes and weekly summary reports
  • Uses data to provide instruction to students and to bring their skills to grade-level
  • Uses identified research-based interventions focused specifically on individual student needs  
  • Maintains data-based documentation of continuous monitoring of student performance and progress 
  • Provides data to school teams and participates in decisions about student progress 
  • Communicates with teachers, administration, and families regarding student progress 
  • Assists with identifying students for placement in intervention groups 
  • Participates in meetings with teachers, administration, and families to discuss student placement and progress
  • Provides diagnostic assessments for students as needed

MTSS Coordination (30%)

  • Prepare and Leads Tier 3 meetings with teachers and leaders to analyze data, review and write student support plans, and provide development in other areas as needed. 
  • Collaborates and attends meetings with Student Support Team, Attendance Team, and Academic Team leaders to improve student outcomes.
  • Work with the leadership team to ensure that the school uses an equity based mindset when designing and implementing interventions.
  • Communicates with teachers, administration, and families regarding student progress 
  • Assists with identifying students for placement in intervention groups 
  • Participates in meetings with teachers, administration, and families to discuss student placement and progress
  • Complete necessary paperwork for referral including analyzing existing data and participate in special education meetings if needed.
  • Manage DIBELS Progress monitor cycles every 2 weeks and report it to the leadership team of the school.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • At least 5 years experience teaching reading
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the science of reading for adolescents
  • A minimum of three years teaching English/intervention with high EOY student mastery and/or growth rates (above 80%)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of federal and state laws related to special education, 504, and the MTSS process.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to remain in a classroom environment for extended periods to deliver instruction.
  • Must be able to monitor students throughout the school building, including transitions, lunch, and recess.
  • Must be able to participate in occasional school events that may occur outside traditional school hours (for example, family conferences, student showcases, or community events).

Benefits & CompensationKIPP DC offers an extremely competitive compensation and benefits package:

  • KIPP DC offers a robust benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurances; various voluntary benefits; and employer paid benefits such as short term disability, long term disability, life insurance, and a membership to One Medical.
  • KIPP DC also offers a 403(b) retirement account with a 3% employer contribution and a 3% match with vesting after three years.
  • Currently, individuals in this role have up to 15 paid time off days, up to 10 paid sick days, and 12 paid holidays. This is subject to change and your exact schedule will be shared in your offer letter.
