Job Summary
The Director of Human Resources role is an integral part of the HR generalist team, ensuring that the human resources team provides the highest level of HR related service to all employees at KIPP DC. The starting salary range for this role is $125,223-$138,403. This is a full-time, hybrid flexible role based at HDQ with an anticipated start date of October 1st.

About the Role

Investing in talent is one of KIPP DC’s top five priorities in our 2025 strategic plan, and the Director of Human Resources plays a significant role in ensuring this priority is met. This individual will oversee the HR generalist team, including 4 team members, who work to ensure that employees receive the highest level of customer service at KIPP DC through the employee lifecycle, onboarding, compliance, or other HR related functions. This role is exempt and will report to the Managing Director of Human Resources.


Location and Type of Work

As a headquarters team that is focused on being responsive to our schools and meeting the needs of our students and families, we approach our work in a way that reflects these priorities. This position will generally work independently and not regularly interface with students, families, or school teams.  This position will primarily work from our headquarters office to maintain a connection to their colleagues and foster a sense of cross-functional collaboration. Because of the nature of this position’s work, this role allows for hybrid flexibility and will be required to be onsite 2 days per week.


Responsibilities

Oversee HR Generalist Workstreams (40% of time)

  • Partner in both the retention and non-retention life cycle of staffing at KIPP DC throughout the year, which covers talent-based strategic priorities, such onboarding and offboarding, retention, and school-based offer letters (both for new hires and returning staff).
  • Collaborate with other headquarters-based cross functional teams to create an exceptional day 1 onboarding experience for all of our new hires, guiding them through essential protocols, compliance, and other personnel best practices that sets them up for success to be in our schools and show up for our students every day 
  • Oversee, manage and execute our internal compensation policies as it relates to staff offer letters and one-time payments (stipends, bonuses, etc.) in order to ensure overall organizational equity. 
  • Maintain and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, including all background checks, to ensure KIPP DC is compliance with federal and local laws as well as KIPP DC policy
  • Oversee HRIS management, including data, reporting, relevant business processes, and position control to keep our staffing data organized and accurate
  • Ensure all staff inquiries to the KIPP DC HR inbox are responded to in a timely manner and that is consistent with the expected level of professional service to ensure staff feel supported as KIPP DC employees

Team Management (40% of time)

  • Craft a vision for the generalist team to support KIPP DC employees, including annual goals and clear roles and responsibilities
  • Lead the team to implement that vision with thoughtful planning and high-quality execution
  • Manage team members on the generalist team, including making strong onboarding plans, sharing clear expectations, sharing regular feedback, facilitating strong communication, and providing support

Cross-team Stakeholder Engagement (20% of time)

  • Support in any relevant organizational priority improvements as it relates to HR.  Serve as a lead representative in cross-team collaboration, specifically with the finance, recruitment, legal, and information teams 
  • Serve as a leader of the talent team and human resources team, including sharing issues as they arise, modeling professionalism and collaboration, and supporting a strong and positive team culture
  • Collaborate with other HR leaders on the employee relations and benefits teams to improve internal driven priorities and processes. 
  • Build strong relationships with school leaders, department heads and key stakeholders in the organization

Requirements & Preferences

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least 6 years of human resources experience or school leadership (principal or vice principal) experience 
  • At least 4 years of people or team management experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with a HRIS systems (preferably Workday)
  • SHRM-CP, PHR, or SPHR certification 
  • 5+ years of K-12 experience 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand frequently
  • Ability to travel across KIPP DC schools
  • Prolonged periods of sedentary work

KIPP DC offers an extremely competitive compensation and benefits package:

  • The anticipated starting salary range for this position is $125,223-$138,403. At KIPP DC we strive for clarity, equity, and to be highly competitive. When determining salaries we look at benchmarks in the education and non-profit sector.  
  • KIPP DC offers a robust benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurances; various voluntary benefits; and employer paid benefits such as short term disability, long term disability, life insurance, and a membership to One Medical.
  • KIPP DC also offers a 403(b) retirement account with a 3% employer contribution and a 3% match with vesting after three years.
  • Currently, individuals in this role have up to 15 paid time off days, up to 10 paid sick days, and 12 paid holidays. This is subject to change and your exact schedule will be shared in your offer letter.
