Job Summary

The Secondary Literacy Coach role is an integral part of the Academics team, ensuring curriculum implementation, teacher and leader development, and data-driven decision making in supporting improved student achievement. This is a full-time, on-site role based at KIPP DC campuses with an anticipated start date of July 2026.

About the Role
In this critical role, you’ll be responsible for developing the content knowledge and pedagogical skills for educators at KIPP DC. You’ll leverage your content and instructional expertise to build trusting relationships with leaders and teachers to drive academic achievement for all KIPP DC students.

Location and Type of Work
This is an exempt position and will report to the school principal. As a school based role that is focused on being responsive to our schools and meeting the needs of our students and families, we approach our work in a way that reflects these priorities. Schools operate in person and our students and families rely on us for in-person support which requires this position to be fully on-site. This role is currently required to be on-site or in schools during regular work hours.

Responsibilities
The percentages for each key responsibility are estimates. Flexibility and responsiveness are encouraged to accommodate organizational needs.

Teaching (20% of the time)

  • Instruct students daily in literacy
  • Analyze student data to design instructional action plans
  • Monitor progress of instructional action plans with assessments
  • Communicates with teachers, administration, and families regarding student progress

Teacher Development (60% of the time)

  • Maintain expertise in KIPP DC curriculum, standards and assessments.
  • Develop teacher content knowledge and pedagogical skills through high-quality professional development and cohesive coaching.
  • Facilitate teachers' data analysis to drive instruction and meet the needs of all learners.
  • Provide focused real time coaching to teachers to improve teaching and learning.

Leadership Team Collaboration(20% of time)

  • Supports development of school-wide vision and takes an active role in investing and mobilizing teachers to achieve the collective goals of the school; owns the implementation of select school priorities in support of the school-wide vision
  • Oversee the implementation of multi-tiered curriculum and interventions
  • Collaborate with school leadership team to align teacher development
  • Participate in school walkthroughs to conduct observations, provide feedback, and develop coaching plans.
  • Communicate priorities, progress updates and critical information weekly.

Requirements & Preferences

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the science of reading for adolescents
  • A minimum of three years teaching English with high EOY student mastery and/or growth rates (above 80%)
  • Minimum of five years of lead teaching experience in specific content area required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • School leadership experience preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel across multiple schools and campuses
  • Coordinate distribution/organization of curricular material

KIPP DC offers an extremely competitive compensation and benefits package:

  • When it comes to compensation, at KIPP DC we strive for clarity, equity, and to be highly competitive. We look at compensation benchmarks in schools across DC. Coach salaries are exempt and start at $86,238 and increase with years of experience. Please see the salary scale here (under Teacher).

  • KIPP DC also offers a 403(b) retirement account with a 3% employer contribution and a 3% match with vesting after three years.
